I have that same jig, and unlike others I have used, this one came with the holes properly centered. The others required tedious adjustments. Also, the jaws are perfectly parallel to one another allowing proper clamping. Not so, with the less expensive ones I have used. Other points: Good brad point bits are preferred for this jig. I also use a 12” single cut bastard file meant for filing metal. I use the dowels with linear flutes pressed in. I take each dowel and, using the file, I roll down the high points of the flutes. This allows the dowels to slide into the holes easily.

Rest assured that once in contact with the water in your glue, the dowels will expand to their original size. As an experiment, I first rolled the dowels and then soaked them in water for about one minute. I then assembled the joint with no glue. I allowed it to dry over night. The dowels expanded so much that the joint cracked before letting loose.

Indeed, let it soak for a few minutes and than allow it to dry and the dowel will have lost the flutes as the wood expanded to its pre-compressed state.
